What To Do in the Whitsundays: 2026 Travel Guide

What to do in the Whitsundays, travel guide

With so many activities and tours to explore in the Whitsundays, it can be hard to know what you’ll be able to fit into the itinerary, what’s really worth doing, and what can wait for next time.

To make your holiday planning a little easier, we’ve compiled the 10 essential things to do in the Whitsundays.

10 Best Things to Do in the Whitsunday Islands

Every trip to the Whitsundays should include a visit to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout. These two major Whitsunday destinations are on almost every tour itinerary – and for good reason.

Whitehaven Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Australia – in fact, Lonely Planet recently named it the best beach in the world in 2025. With approximately seven kilometres of soft white sand for sunbaking, swimming, and lounging, Whitehaven Beach never feels congested.

During your visit to Whitehaven Beach, take a short hike up to the Hill Inlet Lookout for a panoramic view of the iconic silica swirls that flow down to the beach. The hike only takes about 15-20 minutes and has clearly marked stone paths that are easy to follow.

No other activity in the Whitsundays comes close to a sailing tour. Our recommendation is to book an overnight Whitsunday sailing tour with a curated itinerary of 2-3 days’ worth of activities and locations. Book your trip between June and early October, and you’ll have a chance to spot whales on your sailing tour as they migrate up to the North for warmer tropical waters.

And if you don’t want to share the boat with a group of strangers or stick to a structured itinerary, you can book a private sailing tour instead. A Whitsundays private charter can take you anywhere you want to and give you control over how much time to spend at each location.

Sailing experiences in the whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands are one of the many gateways to the Great Barrier Reef – you’ll find many Whitsunday snorkelling tours that can take you to the outer section of the Great Barrier Reef to get up close and personal with coral and marine life.

Snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef is a full-day activity, so make sure you bring along everything from sunscreen to an underwater camera to make the most of the experience. Most tours also include a visit to the specially-built pontoon, where you can swim right up to the reef wall itself.

There are 74 islands to explore in the Whitsundays, many of which have near untouched beaches that you can have all to yourself.

Some of the best Whitsunday beaches to visit (other than Whitehaven Beach) include the sand spit on Langford Island, Chalkie’s Beach on Haslewood Island, and Betty’s Beach just north of the Hill Inlet lookout.

Of course, if you’re planning to stay at Airlie Beach, there’s also the local beach and the Airlie Beach Lagoon. A majority of sailing tours in the Whitsundays depart from Airlie Beach, so it’s a great place to stay during your trip.

5. Scuba Diving Tour

The waters of the Whitsunday Islands are crystal clear when the conditions are right, making it one of the best places off the coast of Australia for scuba diving. Underwater visibility in the region can go up to 15 metres, giving divers full views of coral structures, turtles, and other marine life.

Whitsundays scuba diving tours are suitable for certified and non-certified divers – beginner divers can even get certified on the tour itself through guided dives.

6. Take a Scenic Seaplane or Helicopter Flight

For a change in perspective, hop on a seaplane or helicopter tour that flies by Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, and the Great Barrier Reef. Flights last about 2-3 hours and are hosted by local pilots who can talk you through the region’s history and natural features.

7. Play Golf On Dent Island

Golf enthusiasts have something exceptional to look forward to – there’s a whole island in the Whitsundays dedicated to a championship golf course. The Hamilton Island Golf Club is located on Dent Island, right next to Hamilton Island. The 18-hole course includes dynamic landscapes across valleys and ridges, coupled with beautiful views of the Coral Sea and the Whitsunday Islands.

8. Run on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island hosts a series of endurance runs between May and November each year. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or looking to get your heart rate up, these endurance events offer a unique way to experience Hamilton Island, with race routes leading up to Passage Peak, where you can take in a view of the island.

Even if endurance events are not your cup of tea, the hiking trails covered by the event route are still worth exploring in your own time.

9. Experience the Great Barrier Reef Festival

Plan your Whitsundays trip in late July/early August and join in the festivities for the Great Barrier Reef Festival. This annual festival held at Airlie Beach is a highlight for locals and travellers alike – the event transforms the town with art installations, live music performances, and informational tours hosted by Master Reef Guides.

It’s a celebration worth planning your trip around, especially since the festival events are spread out over 2-3 days, giving you plenty of things to do in the downtime between any tours you’ve booked.

10. Sunset Cruise

A sunset cruise takes you along the shore of Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands for unrestricted views of the spectacular sunset on the Coral Sea horizon. Sunset cruises often include onboard meals and drinks, making it a luxurious (and romantic) experience.

When looking for a sunset cruise, we recommend couples choose vessels that offer adults-only cruises with low guest numbers for an onboard experience that feels more intimate and private.
